An exceptional quality 19th century Victorian coromandel wood veneered jewel or dressing box.

The box has brass edging and the interior is fitted out with fourteen sterling silver topped jars and bottles.

The box was made by 'Wells & Lambe Manufacturers to the Queen Cockspur Street', there is a maker's label on the red silk inside the lid.

The box has an engraved brass plaque on the inside edge of the box "January 1869 From the Earl of Hardwicke".

The crystal jars and bottles have sterling silver lids with hall marks for Victoria, London and the letter 'n' for 1868.

The top tray is red leather edged and red velvet lined, holds nine jars with silver lids, the two small square top jars, one an ink well and match holder.

The second tray holds assorted manicure tools, pens, pencils, mother of pearl mirror, silver spoon, pen knife etc and beneath the tray is a red leather lined storage area.

To the back edge of the box are fitted a large pair of square cut crystal perfume bottles, a pair of circular bottles and a bottle sitting in a silver beaker all with sterling silver hall marked lids.

The bottom of the box has a locking drawer that is fitted out with red velvet to hold rings and jewellery, the lock is stamped "S Mordan & Co London Patent".

The inside of the hinged lid has a red velvet lining which when released by a spring catch drops forward to reveal a removable red leather document folder behind which is a wonderful quality gift metal and wood dressing mirror that free stands.

The top of the box has the initials 'M.E.Y' intertwined and inlaid in brass, the same monogram is engraved into the silver top lids, we assume the "Y" is for Yorke the family name.

The set is in good condition, one of the large square bottles has a small chip to the base.
