Johnstone & Jeanes Side Table

A Middle of the 19th century Victorian mahogany two drawer side table on a trestle base with a turned cross stretcher.

The table is made by the accomplished cabinet makers Johnstone & Jeanes 67 New Bond Street London, the table stamped on the right hand drawer top edge.

The two drawers are mahogany and cedar wood lined and have a cock beaded edge and turned wood knob handles.

The table stands on a pair of trestle ends with short cabriole legs with lappet carved toes and concealed castors.

The vertical supports are tapering and decorated with recessed panels, turned patrea and a boss where the cross stretcher joins.

The table has a gallery back with a turned decoration at each end.

Johnstone & Jeanes were makers of fine quality furniture from the formation of their partnership in 1842. Johnstone had been in partnership with Robert Jupe who together patented the metamorphic dining table, but after a falling out Jupe went his own way.

Johnstone & Jeanes exhibited at all the major exhibitions in London in 1851 and 1862 and also in Paris in 1878. The Royal Collection has a piece of Johnstone & Jeanes furniture, a walnut veneered table.

The table is in good condition and has been made from quality timbers. (Circa 1870)
