Japanese Satsuma Pottery Koro


A late 19th century Meiji period (1868 - 1912) Japanese Satsuma pottery koro.

The koro has the Hodata mark for the Shimazu family underneath and a pierced silver plated lid decorated with flowers.

The koro is decorated with four major panels showing scenes of Buddhist monks (Kannon & Rakan), Samurai warriors and below these a band of flying ladies in traditional dress.

The koro is highlighted in gilt and further decorated with panels of specimen decoration.

The koro is in good condition with some crazing inside and under the base. (Circa 1890)
