Products
At Graham Smith Antiques we always aim to stock a wide variety of antique furniture and small items of interest. We do wish to warn customers that an item you like one day may be gone the next, so to avoid any disappointment please telephone the shop during opening hours to reserve an item you wish to think about for a maximum of twelve hours.
Bookcases
Bookcases are generally well represented within our stock, often comprising mainly of open bookshelves, glazed bookcases, revolving bookcases and book troughs.
As with many of our products we have bookcases from various periods of history and differing materials. For example; mahogany, oak, walnut, rosewood, Edwardian, Georgian, Victorian and Regency. Different styles of bookcases including breakfront and gothic are commonly found in our range as well as small bookstands and bookends.
Boxes
Our boxes category can be quite eclectic, with everything from writing boxes to tea caddies. Boxes with specific purposes such as sewing, jewellery, string, artists, deed and snuffboxes are often in stock but regularly purchased purely for decorative purposes.
Product range varies due to the nature of the items, although Sorrento boxes, box desks and Tunbridge ware boxes are often available.
Battle, inlaid, document and Ormolu mounted boxes are other types that you may come across whilst browsing our selection.
Cabinets
Cabinets are kept in stock at all times, including display cabinets, bedside cabinets, whatnots, china, trophy and crockery cabinets. As mentioned in the tables’ section, corner cabinets make excellent flat screen television houses, as closing the doors when not in use can hide them.
Ceramics
Ceramics is a very wide category and can often contain a large variety of items, makers and genres. The three main separations within the category are English, continental, oriental ceramics.
Porcelain is one of the most common materials within ceramics, although pottery and china could also appear in this category. In terms of makers and types, we have a good stock of Imari, Royal Doulton, Masons, Majolica, Irish Belleek, Meissen, royal Worcester, Sunderland ware, canton, royal crown Derby, Minton, Wedgwood, Dresden, Moorcroft, Staffordshire and Newcastle mailing.
Product types vary although cups, saucers, vases, plates, tankards, tea sets, jugs, figurines and bowls are nearly always in stock. We also stock other less common ceramic items such as chamber pots, teapots, egg cups, biscuit barrels, cheese dishes, trays, cabaret sets, mugs, plaques, loving cups, chocolate pots, beakers, dessert plates, dinner sets, Satsuma ware and meat plates.
Chairs
A wide variety of chairs are always available at Graham Smith Antiques and the selection includes single, pairs or sets of chairs. We also stock chairs of various materials (oak, mahogany, walnut, rosewood, yew wood or elm chairs.) Various styles of chairs can be searched for by name online, such as Hepplewhite, Sheraton, Chippendale or Windsor chairs. For the more relaxed customer we have elbow, easy, arm, rocking, reclining or children’s chairs.
Many of our chairs are upholstered, although some may be in need of reupholstering. We tend not to do this before a chair is purchased as each customer has their own taste of colours and patterns. (Reupholstering can be arranged at the cost of the customer.) Our range spans several historical periods, including Victorian, Edwardian, Regency and Georgian. Differing styles of chairs are chosen to cater for all tastes, such as balloon back, cabriole leg, Cameo Back, Metamorphic, Library and Sabre Leg chairs. Stools of various descriptions are also in stock in small numbers, including Piano, Revolving, Dressing, X Frame and Duet Stools.
Chests
We always have a selection of chests in stock; these include commodes, tallboys, lowboys, highboys and dower chests. Graham Smith antiques have a good choice of Chests of Drawers, including military, mahogany, Oak, walnut, miniature, apprentice and scotch chests. On some occasions we may also have lesser-known types of chests, such as medical chests, trunks, chest on chests, secretaires, federal chests, serpentine chests or coffers.
Clocks
Clocks are a personal favourite of Graham Smiths, specifically grandfather clocks. We also often have grandmother, mantle, carriage and wall clocks in stock too. Intermittently we have watches in stock, although rarely more than a couple at any one time (they can include wrist watches, pocket, hunter, half hunter or fob watches.)
Different styles of clocks can be found within our range, varying from week to week including painted dial, hall, cuckoo, long cased or Vienna wall clocks.
Desks
Desks for various purposes are always in stock, including bureaus, kneehole, Partners, Office, leather topped, pedestal and davenport desks. Children’s Desks are available relatively frequently and box desks are also often in stock.
Some of the desks have polished backs to allow them to be freestanding in a room.
Gift Ideas
Our gifts category aims to make it easier and quicker for customers to sort through budget-ranged items. We stock birthday, wedding, anniversary, christening and Christmas presents. We strive to provide unique gift ideas for friends and family alike.
Glass
Although we specialise in furnishing antiques, glass is a category with both a decorative and practical aspect that we consider very important. We stock both sets of glasses as well as single glasses and have a selection of Glass vases, jugs, bowls, and decanters.
More alternative items such as tazzas’, Rummers, tankards and glass Candlesticks are regularly in stock, as well as glass ink pots, scent bottles, perfume bottles and lustre’s.
Most of the glass items you will find at Graham Smith Antiques will be cut glass rather than moulded glass due to the age and quality of our products.
Large Furnishings
As we specialise in furnishing antiques, our large furnishings range is always prevalent. We stock wardrobes, settees, armoires, linen presses, clothes presses, cupboards, chiffoniers, sideboards, closets, tray presses, four poster beds, chesterfields, chaise Lounge, and chaises.
Due to the space needed to store the above articles we may not always have a wide selection of each item in stock. However, we are more than happy to accommodate requests for a specific style, period or size to be sought by Graham whilst he is on his travels.
Lighting
Our lighting range is relatively small, although due to this each product is generally quite unique or interesting. We often have chandeliers, lamps, wall lights and oil lamps. Sometimes we also have standard lamps or candelabra in stock.
Metal ware
Metal ware products can be very varied although popular items such as brass candlesticks will always be in stock. We have a range of different metal items, including bronze, Spelter, ormolu, pewter, copper and brass.
Metal Boot scrapers, Stick Stands, Kettles, Buckets, Candlesticks, Jardinières, Samovars, Ink Wells, Doorstops, jam pans, figurines, Jugs are other products that you may find in our shop.
Mirrors
Our range of mirrors is quite varied, with generally one or two of each type in stock at any one time. Cheval, dressing and wall mirrors are generally our most popular styles. Although we also stock hanging, vanity, convex, Pier glass and over mantel mirrors too.
Cheval mirrors especially can sell very quickly so do beware of going away to think about one without reserving it for our online maximum of twelve hours if interested. The reservation period begins from the time we respond to agree to the holding of a product via email or phone.
Occasional Furniture
Occasional furniture tens to be those items that are either obscure or not a large enough category in themselves to be separated. This may include, stands, screens, plant holders, planters, Canterbury’s, commodes, dumb waiters, washstands, Étagère, chess sets or draughts sets.
Other items of an interesting nature often include towel rails, stick stands, walking sticks, easels, portfolio stands, bed steps, pole screens, cellarets and bidets. This list is of course not exhaustive as this category may have any number of unimaginable treasures hidden within it, although the products mentioned tend to be the most commonly available.
Scientific Objects
Scientific objects tends to make up quite a small proportion of our stock, although most prevalent are the barometers. We also often have barographs, thermometers, compasses and apothecary jars available.
Small Articles of Interest
This category tends to include items that are made from uncategorised materials or are relatively rare. This could include trays, coasters, prints, silhouettes, samplers, figurines, candlesticks, puzzle balls, wall plaques, watercolours, wool works, needlework, post boxes, dolls, dice, pestle and mortars, napkin rings, globes, Christmas cards or net sakes.
The majority of items in this category are only decorative and have little practical purpose, although some pieces can be very interesting and make ideal presents for friends or family.
Tables
At Graham Smith antiques we aim to stock quality furnishing antiques, meaning practical items such as tables are always in stock in every shape and size imaginable! We have everything from dressing, dining, kitchen, coffee and breakfast tables to lamp tables, candle stands, wine, bedside and nests of tables. We also stock more unusual and specific purpose tables, such as occasional, tip top, tea, card, games, work, harlequin, triple top and billiard tables. Not to mention snooker and bagatelle tables!
Differing tastes in terms of styles should not be a problem with our range of drop leaf, Wind Out, Louis, Looe, Concertina Action, Sutherland, Pembroke, pad foot and farmhouse tables.
Other items in this category may include supper tables, demi lune shaped; turn over top, coaching, butlers, side tables, kneehole or serving tables.
Display tables such as bijouterie are acquired every so often but should you require a specific size please contact us with dimensions. Many of our tables are suitable for supporting flat screen televisions, although corner cabinets also serve this purpose very well for a more discreet option.
