George II Bookcase by John Franklin

A mid 18th century George II mahogany cabinet bookcase by John Franklin of London.

The bookcase comprises a cabinet top with a pair of astragal doors and two solid mahogany adjustable shelves that slide out.

The cupboard base has a pair of doors with recessed fielded panels and inside two adjustable oak shelves that have mahogany front edges.

The inside left hand door of the cabinet base has a maker's label "John Franklin cabinet maker & upholsterer, At the sign of the chair in Bell Court, Doctor's Commons London".

This area of London in the mid 18th century had a community of cabinet maker's, carvers, upholsterers and other artists.

The bookcase has a dental moulded cornice, shaped bracket feet and the interior has attractive brass hardware but old replaced locks.

This very neat sized bookcase is in good condition. (Circa 1750)
