Carved Wood Lion of Lucerne
code:3922A late 19th century carved lime wood figure of the "Lion of Lucerne".
The "Lion Monument", or the Lion of Lucerne, is a sculpture in Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn.
It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris, France.
The lion figure is lying asleep resting on a shield raised on a plinth.
The figure is a very good colour and would have been brought back to Britain from the 'Grand Tour' of Europe in the 19th century. (Circa 1890)
