A pair of late 19th century Japanese Satsuma vases from the Meiji period (1864-1911).

The vases have a round base and a slim neck that flares at the top and has gilt elephant head handles.

The vases have a dark blue glaze and are decorated with two hand painted panels, one of Samurai warriors and the other of Japanese ladies in traditional dress.

The neck of the vase has two scenes painted in gold, one a Japanese landscape of mount Fuji in the background and the other chrysanthemums and foliage against a trellis.

The vases have other gilt decorations, a gilt lip and bottom rim and a caricature mark in red and gold underneath.

The vases are in good condition. (Circa 1890)
