A mid 19th century Victorian black lacquered wood and papier-mâché ink well and pen stand.

The stand and lids have a painted and gilt decoration of flowers and swags while the central box lid has a carved mother of pearl knob handle.

The ink wells are heavily cut glass and have square bases to slot into the stand that also has two pen troughs.

The ink well stand is in good condition with some wear to the painted and gilt decoration.

The two papier-mâché lids to the ink wells are chipped under their rims.

The ink well came out of "The Hermitage" estate Hexham Northumberland
